perlucida web design and development

My Portfolio

Below you'll find details of several of the sites I've created. They are ordered with most recent at the top, oldest at the bottom of the page.

Dundee and North East Fife NCT

The National Childbirth trust is a charity offering support pre and post-natal support to parents. Many local branches have their own sites, this is one of them. Building the site on the Drupal Content Management system allowed me to deliver a site with high functionality at very low cost, and importantly one which the members can update themselves.

WatchWords

Word lover Andy Moore provides a range of services including writing, copy-writing and proofreading. The basic visual design of the site was created by Jonathan Clarkson (of ContemplationSpace, see below), then elaborated and converted to a Drupal theme by myself. Drupal is a PHP based open source content management system, by building watchwords.co.uk on Drupal I've empowered Andy to edit the site content himself.

Woodford Golf Club

In Woodford Green, London, lies the Woodford Golf Club. Built on the Drupal content management system the web site enables the club committee and secretary to update the content themselves. It also includes a substantial members only section not visible to the general public.

ContemplationSpace

Jonathan Clarkson is a design consultant with a wide portfolio including street furniture and garden structures. Because Jonathan himself is a designer he wanted to have big input in the design of the site. The result is a site with a visual style that is as much Jonathan's as mine.

Opprints

Created for Nicholas Wade, Opprints is primarily a site of visual illusions, but also details the many books which Nick has published.

perlucida

This site itself is of course one of my creations. Valid XHTML1.0 and CSS2, requires a modern browser to look its best, but is also useable in older browsers. I've used PHP to create a modular site, separating the header, footer and dynamically generated navigation menu into separate files to speed updates to the site.

XstalBio

A university spin out company with some interesting technology. The web site used PHP to redirect visitors to a version of the site suited to their browser, allowing a consistent look in both old and modern browsers. The logo was supplied by XstalBio and the site designed around it. The site was redesigned in 2005, but sadly not by me.

SPHOP

Scotch Perspectives is a small society with around 100 members. I run the web site. This site was started in 1999 and has been through several updates. It now runs on the open source Drupal content management system, which uses the MySQL database and PHP.

RJC Laboratory

It was in Richard Cogdell's lab that I studied for my PhD, so I was ideally suited to create this site. It has since been partially revamped by their in-house web designer but a lot of my original work remains (pages with a black background). You can dive straight into the pages I created using the links below. The coding style and layout are looking dated now, and it would look quite different if I re-designed the site today. It required a Javascript interface for the Chime plugin and the generation of many ray traced graphics of the protein molecules.
